How long have you been a member of CrossFit 100?

About a year and three months

What were you doing before you joined and what brought you to us?

I was doing nothing and I was very unhappy with myself. But I had known Teri (Starry) and that she’d been here about a year before I came. She was always talking about CrossFit, but, as you know, Teri is a pretty intimidating athlete. So, I thought, if Teri does it, I’m not going to be able to do it.

Then I met Tobi (Cawthra) and she really convinced me to do it. I didn’t know her as well. She’s also an intimidating athlete, but I didn’t know that yet!

What were your initial thoughts once you were convinced and made it through the doors?

I certainly wasn’t expecting to really like it. But I did. I’ve never stuck with an exercise program before. And I’ve never lifted weights before. That’s the part I really liked, the weightlifting.

I’d never heard of a burpee. And a squat ... I think I’d heard of that but I’d never done one. It was really something to learn in my forties!

I have watched you make major strides in your skills and abilities. Did you set goals for yourself when you started?

Not at first I didn’t. Because I wasn’t expecting to like it. But then I did, so, my first goal was to come three times per week. That’s all. Then my goal was to get through the workout, the whole thing. And now I come four to five times a week. My goals are more specific, like, do a pull up. I want to get better at box jumps. Get a handstand push-up probably, ‘cuz it just looks cool.

I also notice you’re working on increasing weights in workouts?

I have been trying to do that. I’m done messin’ around! Also, Stacey (Bynum) and I started around the same so if she’s lifting a heavy weight I feel like I have to lift the same as she is!

You’re mostly here in the late afternoon and evenings, sometimes Saturday mornings?

Yes, and that’s another surprise to me because I’m not a morning person for working out.

How did you get your daughter, Mandy, to join you?

I didn’t really do anything. She asked me if she could come. She tried a Groupon and liked it and wanted to join. I was really happy about it.

Do you two talk about CrossFit together outside of class?

Yes! And It’s fun for me to see her having conversations with adults in class. The teenagers are impressive to me because I wouldn’t have done this as a teenager. Especially not with my mom.

We have to talk about your success, this past year, with CrossFit 100 Nutrition. Tell me a little about your experience:

I started in February. And I’m still surprised at how long it takes to get to your goals with fitness and nutrition. Because all your life you’re told, “In six weeks, you’ll have amazing results and be a different person!” And it’s just not like that. So the nutrition was hard at first because it’s pretty boring. It’s just whole foods. There’s no magic.

But now, I’m pretty used to it. And (Marcela and I) keep changing it up. I’m working toward my goals and it might take another year to get there, but that’s okay. I’m okay with that.

Have you hit any points where you wanted to quit?

A lot of times, I would hit a plateau. But, luckily we have the InBody Scan which shows an increase in muscle mass, so even if the scale doesn’t move, my muscle mass has increased and my body fat has decreased, and that’s what keeps me going.

And I held steady through the holidays, which is kind of all you can ask.

What are your stats looking like right now?

I’ve lost about 30 pounds and my body fat has gone down ten percentage points. Nothing’s every worked for me before and I’ve always struggled with my weight so it is pretty amazing.

We are all so proud of you and love seeing how far you’ve come when we see your old pictures on the lobby slide show.

That’s really encouraging because sometimes I can’t see the changes. I can see them on paper but not when I look in the mirror. Ive got some work to do still, but I’m okay with that.

Any advice for someone starting out?

It’s been a way bigger part than I expected it to be and I really enjoy it here. Just know it will take longer than you want it to, but it will be worth it.
